Former Uruguayan forward Diego Forlan’s is widely speculated to become the marquee player of Atlético de Kolkata for the third season of Indian Super League but the team owners today remained tightlipped on the subject.
“We have not yet decided on our marquee player. We will announce the name before the (August 28) deadline and he will be befitting.”
co-owner Sanjiv Goenka told reporters today.
The inaugural edition champions who finished second last year had a terrible experience with their marquee player
Helder Postiga in 2015 as the Portuguese forward picked up an injury in the very first match of the season and went on to miss the remainder.
“You learn from mistakes. Each franchise makes a team with an objective to win. Nobody wants to make a team to do badly or lose. We have had a selection process and the coach’s choice will be final. Selection is a subjective issue.”
The Golden Ball winner of the 2010 World Cup, Forlan, is second on the honours roll of most capped Uruguayan players with 112 appearances for La Celeste, scoring 36 goals.
Forlan is best known for making 134 appearances between 2007-11 for ATK’s co-owner Atlético Madrid where he scored 74 goals.
